PCOS Diet Guide

Below is a blog written by a PCOS warrior on a book that gives women with PCOS dieting guidelines.

This is book is SPECIFICALLY for women who have PCOS! Yes, our very OWN cookbook. I was so happy to see this but the book is entitled: The PCOS Diet Cookbook but it has a “guide” as to what foods are great to eat and what isn’t so great to eat.  They also suggest a low glycemic diet ( low in sugar/carbs).

Now according this book ( and I have to agree) that eating a diet with low GI will also fight extreme obesity ( which some of us, including myself have to watch out for), lowers the blood fats, and of course reduces the risk of developing diabetes later. Now the thing to look for in grocery stores:
1. ingredients
2. food acidity
3.fiber
4.cerealsNow with ingredients, just because something is “sugar free”, does not mean it literally is, it just means that item contains no sucrose. With that in mind it still may be high in carbohydrates! For example…when drinking coffee, instead of using creamer…use lowfat milk.

Eat food suchs as oranges, lemons….they have lower GIs thus helping the body breakdown insulin easier (insulin is a peptide in the stomach) so for salad dressings choosing vinegerettes is an excellent option.

Fiber lowers the “bad” cholestrol, or should I say it helps lower it. Eating a diet with more fiber also helps us pass food through our colon…and another issue to take into account gastral peresis!

Fats and Oils
Sprays such as Pam are great to use instead of butter, etc. for cooking. I prefer a vegetable spray or such as Pam to use.

Seasonings
Mrs. Dash is another great one to use instead of salt, etc. for seasoning food.

These are just some examples but here is an example from the book for a daily meal plan:

Breakfast
Oatmeal ( use skim milk) add fruit such as peaches

Lunch
Egg salad
Wheat bread
Cup of berriesSnacks
Hummus with celery or carrots (no pita bread!)

Dinner
Salmon
Green salad with balsamic vinegerette
Split pea soup

The book also gives ideas for when eating out.

The book is called: The PCOS Diet Guidebook - by Norene Gilletz and Nadir R. Farid.  It can be found at amazon.com, libraries and various other bookstores.
