Invisible Soldier

by Jenn Randolph

My girlfriend shared a true story with me the other day, and it’s from a book called the Invisible War. (I might not get it exactly right, but here’s the jest). A missionary who was living in another country was carrying medicine and food back and forth to help people in the jungle. But one evening, he ran across two men fighting to the death and he stopped to help them. He bandaged them and cared for them, but because he stopped to help them, he didn’t have time to get back to his village before the sun went down and one wouldn’t dare travel on the roads at night time. So he had to stay the night in the jungle. Later that night when the very men that he helped we’re feeling better, they gathered a few more men and set out to attack this missionary to steal his medicine and whatever else they could get their hands on, and would have probably left him for dead. But when they found where he settled in the jungle, they saw 26 soldiers standing around him while he slept. Each man counted and they all came up with 26, and that was more men then they had with them, so they decided they were out numbered and left. Later, at another chance meeting in a village, they saw this missionary and asked where these 26 men came from, because they knew he traveled alone. The missionary looked at them in dismay and told them that he WAS alone that night. When this missionary returned to the states and was sharing this story in his home church on Sunday, one man stood up and said he might have an idea what happened that evening. He told the missionary that one night God put a heavy burden on his heart to pray for him that very specific night, so he called as many men as he could, and asked them to join him in prayer. He then asked all the men in the congregation who he called that night to stand up, and when they were done counting, there were 26 men standing! Whether we realize it or not, there are spiritual battles going on every day in our lives. And our prayers are a very big part of these battles. I know that sometimes it feels like our prayers are just going up in the air, sometimes we feel tired of praying for the same thing and getting frustrated when we don’t see the answer we’re looking for, and sometimes we just plain forget to pray today because life is busy, but God says,

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. -Matt 18:20

These men’s prayers stood by this man when even he didn’t even know it and God used their prayers to protect this man in a way we never thought possible.
